Cannot use the site because of a message that I have to "read and accept".
I am a paying customer but that message was not there when I paid.
This is bad.. to force something on your paying users, even if it's a good thing.

What do You mean force ?
Just read it and thats it . Something is not working ?

It's only one button "I've read and accept" so only way to close the message is to "read and accept" (message is irrelevant).

This button is just act like close button.
We will change this text on button. No worries.
