Digital payments existed even before Bitcoin. PayPal (originally called Confinity), for example, was introduced more than a decade before Bitcoin. In fact, Bitcoin was invented to compete with PayPal, since its primary purpose was to allow for micropayments on the internet but without the regulatory interference associated with credit cards and without the need for trusted third-parties to facilitate the transactions.
