Why am I not surprised. I long suspected that video conferencing software would have this issue, especially with all the world's WFH employees now on Zoom or similar.
It's a feature, not a bug. Big brother is listening, and your company is likely spying on your muted utterances.

Good info. Muting audio is easy enough, muting the mic from the OS more difficult. I wonder if there's an easier way than suggested in the article.
Buy a laptop with hardware kill switches to physically disconnect the camera and mic.

If any WFH employee is supplied by their corporation a company laptop, desktop, or VPN terminal to do work with, then *guaranteed* it is already compromised with spyware, keylogger, video logger, audio logger, remote kill switch, etc.
