Which exchange are you talking about? Almost all centralized exchange these days require you to perform identity verification while few others only ask such thing when it's "needed". If you prefer to protect your privacy, use P2P or decentralized exchange which already mentioned by other member.
As for those who did this how safe is it? I don't have anything against verification but I am not sure its safe or am I wrong about its safety?.
It's varied by how the exchange verify and store your data. I expect exchange which use 3rd party to verify customer identity less private/secure.
