Suddenly I found that cgminer could no longer log into Kano.is for pooled mining and
complained of an "authorisation" error.

Second get on Kano's Discord Channel.
Third Kano is very proactive on banning IP ranges that may be doing something malicious. This is a good thing. But of course legit users sometimes fall in that IP range. So contact Kano, correctly, and he can whitelist your IP, if that is the issue.
