<and how does one go about getting citizenship?>
GEORGIACitizenshipGeorgian
citizenship can be granted to foreigners that meets the requirements which includes lawfully resided in Georgia for the last 10 consecutive years, speak Georgian language, know the history of Georgia/basic laws and have a job and/or real estate in Georgia. From the requirements the pathway to get citizenship is to gain residency.
ResidencyResidency in Georgia can be derived through different options which include; Temporal,
work , investment, family reunification and other types of residency permits (including student and special residence permit). My focus would be temporal residence permit, Work Residence Permit and Investment Residence Permit because they relates to my pathway of gaining Georgian citizenship.
A
temporary residential permit would be granted to new entrants for the period of 6 to 12 months and it can be extended to an additional period of 1 to 11 years. After 10 years you would be able to apply for permanent residency. Proof of have proof of sufficient funds to support oneself for the duration of the residence permit must be ascertained.
While the
work residence permit is granted to individuals who are coming to Georgia employment activities. The person must have an employment contract (or an employment certificate) with at least 6 months remaining. This residence permit can also be renewed for the periods of up to 11 years. The challenge would be how to secure a job in Georgia due to language barrier. But If I can use my temporal residency and secure a job, then I would be fortunate. As for the proof of sufficient funds, I would be able to save up to $1320 for six months from my campaign fund which is above the total monthly expense of $1170 this fund would qualify me for the residency. I might not consider how much the job pay because with my campaign income of $220 I can lawfully resided in Georgia for the last 10 consecutive years and gain all the other requirements for citizenship.
Investment Residence: It could be divided into Residence Permit based on property ownership and based on Investment. Residence Permit based on
property ownership is issued to the person and his/her family members (meaning dependants / spouse only) who own a property (except for agricultural land that is worth above 100,000 USD equivalents in GEL. Under the 100k investment (short-term residence permit) you have to wait 10 years before you can apply for permanent residency. While Residence Permit based on
investment in business is given to anyone that invests up to 300k USD equivalent in GEL in any sector of the Georgian economy. After 5 years the investor can apply for permanent residency. These options are no go areas for me. It would be impossible to get residence based on investment because it would take me 37 years and nine months to raise funds for residence Permit based on property ownership and 113 years and 6 months to get the Residence Permit based on investment in business.
