Pacers sign him to a max sheet.  Now Suns hands are tied.  Let him him go for nothing or sign him to max and not be able to use him in a Durant deal.  2 days tick tock Phoenix.  Should be interesting to see what happens here.  
I would say that Suns were already not interested in signing him anyway. I think it is going to be a good trading piece for Pacers. Let’s face it, some teams do not have a chance to be champions, no matter what happens they do not have that championship fabric. I do not expect Orlando, Cavs (again anyway), Suns, OKC etc etc to be champions.

There are like 15 of these teams and they are not championship material season in and season out, and they do this for over a decade, some for over two decades. This isn't just "not being champions" thing, they haven't been contenders for that long. This is why Pacers getting Ayton will not be a big deal neither, but they could trade him for some stuff at least.
