There are many in this space that never invested in BTC and they made the best gains in Altcoin mate, with good strategy you are good to go, I am one of those people and this is an example, first of all never put all your money in a altcoin, diversify, let say I have 1000$ to invest in 5 different altcoins, if one of these 5 altcoins just x10 It means I have made back 1000$ I use to invest in all 5 projects and still have an extra 1000$ as my gaining, remember, this is one project out of 5, this doesn't mean you should blindly invest, choose the good altcoins and buy only when all hope is gone aka ( bear market ).
