The gambling mindset is still there he still can remember his sessions his wins the excitement gambling generates and he will try to replicate that feeling by playing cards with people, if you are an addict you will use your imagination to replicate the feelings, if there is a will there is a way for gambling addict, the absence will just make him misses the dopamine.

But I think eventually you'll get over it especially if you really want to stop your gambling addiction. The change of environment is good to start anew, different from what you used to, and much better if there's no way you can access an internet so you can move on.
