As a software developer, you are ahead to understand the technical things of bitcoin. You could be passionate about bitcoin is you approach it from the technical aspect of it. Bitcoin is an open source protocol and I learnt it was written in C++ language. If you visit the technical board you may have to know how to download or run a node and begin to work in the back end of bitcoin.
