The answer is that ....it's always really really hard finding a coin that could just have a positive ROI!

If you like to gamble your money, you can pick one of suggested coin and trying your luck.
My suggestion is to focus your effort in understand why/what bitcoin has introduced and why it's something "new" and deserve so many attention by investors and users.
Probably there are altcoins that deserve attention too... but there are other reason and most of the times are just speculation.
If you want invest in "long term" I think that most of your effort should be directed to bitcoin only.
