As the situation stands, I don't think it will happen, but provided we don't all die in a nuclear holocaust, I think Europe will lose a lot, as you say.
A while ago an analyst described Europe as that majestic white mare that has a broken leg and while it is on the ground it is surrounded by bears, eagles, lions, even jackals. They are all showing their teeth and claws...With every passing day, this description looks more real.
