I just opened this topic because imo YES, Free NFTs are a waste of time.
NFT is like a key to unlock a door, like a inmutable stamp of ownership, a piece of art, and more... it's a valuable thing and can't be given for free. However you can transfer it to anyone you know, freely.
Currently I'm playing with Private NFTs. Yes, FULLY PRIVATE
I can manage my NFTs inside a DApp which is protected and also become a publisher of new NFTs. Which is sick !! 
I fully own my NFTs and nobody knows I am the owner, yet I can speculate and sell them or transfer them freely. I believe this is the next step, since most NFTs are public and that's quite dangerous tbh.
