Its not a subject I would debate to long as its ultimately upto the individual, like Christianity and the majority of other faiths there are varying interpretations of the main body to that belief system.  Some places its considered ok and some it would be illegal but I think everywhere excessive gambling with no control that leads to ruin is always considered a total negative to be avoided like many other activities that can turn negative if overdone.
