I'd go with leaving the blockchain data on the HDD and buying a 1 TB SSD for the OS. 128 or 256 is probably not enough if you use your laptop for more than just running a node. Also, SSD won't die just because you don't turn it on, most of the time it is caused by too much writing. You can learn more if you search about SSD write cycle.
