Gary Lineker has poked fun at Piers Morgan as their social media debate regarding Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo continued.
The BBC anchor is a firm believer in Messi being the greatest of all time, whilst Morgan has been vocal in his belief that Ronaldo ranks above them all. Saturday night though belonged to the Argentine as he and his country marched on into the last eight of the World Cup.
Messi, who enjoyed a record breaking evening on his 1000th career appearance, scored the opener for the South Americans in what was a lacklustre first-half against Australia. The PSG star's performance earned huge plaudits in the BBC studio - with Rio Ferdinand in particular waxing lyrical about the forward.

I don't like fanboy battles, but the very existence of the Ronaldo-Messi dispute always surprises me. Messi is not known to anyone outside of Barcelona (without Xavi and Iniesta, to put it bluntly) while Ronaldo has succeeded everywhere. I don’t know the history (the real story with the naughty Blatter and other actors) of this phenomenon, but Messi’s PR has been at a deafening level since his very appearance in football, and many succumbed to it.

I really think that at this point the Messi vs. Ronaldo debate makes no sense. Because if you look at their ages, they are at the end part of their career which is quite saddening.

So, instead of debating who is the better one, we should just enjoy their games while they are able to do so. But if we really need to talk about it, I think in my opinion Messi is somewhat god-gifted and Cristiano Ronaldo is a really hard worker who is ready to give up anything for training and improving himself. But there is no one denying that these two are the greatest footballers of this generation and it is going to be really sad to watch them depart.
