If the dude was "the special one" then he would have been managing a big club, and yes he was great at some point in his career, winning league titles and champions league and all that, he was known as one of the best at a point. However, for the past 5 years or so he has been given chances left and right and he always got bad results and that is why he has been sacked.
Roma is not a huge club, sure a known club but not a huge club, and that is why Mourinho went from "the team that may win the league title and champions league in a single season" to a team "should be fighting for a UCL position hopefully" level.
