I'm usually on the services, auctions, and digital goods section, so yeah I don't really browse on the forums.

It made a huge different in other parts of the forums, altcoin section, off topic, bitcoin discussion and so on.

What exactly happened? I only heard that a lot of ponzis started up.

Well, essentially all the junk that was forcibly quarantined in the newb section was spread everywhere else: spambots, begging posts, stupid beginners questions in the Bitcoin subforum etc.
