it really depends on the competition
some things are more skill based than others
after all a competition without skill is simply a giveaway (nothing wrong with that too)
I am not talking about skill based games but on a general basis that most gambling games are luck based in which your skills won't matter much so if you are lucky you will win otherwise loss.There are skill based games in which luck factor combined with your strategies can lead to win but not in all of them.

and even in some pure luck games you can use skill (most math and probability) to manage bankroll and calculate best odds in a determinate play

Yeah we can always imply our own strategies where we can to determine the odds with our bankroll to have decent wins.As you said there are many ways and sometimes we find the best way but you should be lucky as it works different for all.
