So it's a bit difficult to say Arsenal were ultimately thwarted by the mediocare team, but that's the end of the story of Arsenal's journey in the Europa League this season. Only Lol, people are even too sure that Arsenal advanced to the final this season.
I've said it was a difficult game for Arsenal because I believe Sporting will do everything to score goals. Granit Xhaka's goals were good, but Pedro Goncalves's was absolutely the best all season. Of course it was disappointing home match for Arsenal, tragic after being favorites this season to reach the final and win the Europa League. So now Arsenal only have to focus on maintaining their points advantage in the Premier League by playing well and avoiding defeat. The odds are good, but I think they will definitely be affected by the failure of the Europa League.
I completely agree with you up to that point where Arsenal scored an early goal in the 19th minute. To be honest I thought that that goal is the opener to the next round in the Europa League because the set up was perfect for Arsenal. Take the lead in their home stadium, concentrate on the defense and wait for their chances with fast counter attacks and their strong offense with the people in the stadium in the back.
But Sporting stayed strong enough and was patiently waiting for their chance. A second goal would have been the end for them, but this way they could keep believing in themselves and then in overtime they knew that both is fine, either to score a goal or to take it to the penalties. A great achievement for Sporting that deserves respect.
