it might be an idea to try the procedure of doing it with a new ledger?
So as to have a kind of backup copy?
-initialize a new ledger with the seed I already have from 2017
-install electrum as recommended by bitmover in the first reply?

once I've checked that all this works I might upgrade the current ledger as well. am I being too cautious?
