When I set the password, I also did not choose to encrypt the file. I only have the saved wallet file left.
This doesn't change anything.
If you unchecked "Encrypt wallet file" when creating the wallet, you can open the wallet file and see your transactions history and addresses, but you will still need the password for making any transaction. Your addresses secrets like your seed phrase are encrypted.
