many gambling addicts have lost their minds because their desire to continue gambling overpowers their common sense, hence the importance of "gambling responsibly"
The man in this story should never be allowed to see his daughter again or anywhere around children. He is a risk to them. Now he has destroyed his relationship his family forever. That what gambling does. It firsts destroys the life of the gambler then it goes on to destroy the relationship with the family and friends. If can't gamble with discipline then do not gamble at all. Gamblers need new friends and new hobbies. Sometimes, your environment and associations has its way of holding you down and holding you back. I hope we learn from this pathetic story.
Why not? It's hard for the child to grow up without a father, you know. The father can still be forgiven but he needs to promise that he will now change his life for the better. Gambling didn't do this incident so don't put the blame on it.

This is why gambling got a bad reputation because people often mistaken it as bad when in fact the problem is with them or the person that over gambles but I agree that we need a friend if we are lonely but we need to choose them wisely.  Finding a new hobby is also a great suggestion. Both of them can prevent us from becoming a gambling addict because we can now spend less time in this activity.
A great contribution indeed, but even as true as your comment is, the unfortunate fact remains that, most human beings will always find something to blame their misfortune on, it is just the way the human mind is wired, it takes great training, learning and energy to break free from such mindset.

I've seen criminals who when caught and being beaten, blame their parents inability to give them the kind of money they want for their upkeep, as a reason why they went into stealing..
They say this with all seriousness, hoping to find mercy from the angry mob, forgetting that there are still People who's parents are poorer, but yet, worked hard legitimately to fend for themselves, family and even the poor parents included.
