Just check the oldest players we had in the 2022 world cup in the picture below from transfermarkt:



Why a player with 38 or 39y old should play in this tournament when they could use younger players and even make them ready for the next world cup to have better performance?

Maybe it's a marketing issue. Messi is a big brand, even if he has faded as a player, and in 2 years he will be completely bad. We all remember how FIFA paid Maradona simply for being in the VIP box at the World Cup - in the case of Messi, perhaps we have the same thing. In the end in two years everyone will be focused on the fight of the two new titans (Mbappe and Haaland), but Haaland will not be present at the World Cup so someone old will have to be used  Grin
