You've misread him IMO, he didn't tell he stopped gambling, he said the bookie has still not paid his winnings neither give him back his own deposited funds till now. Fortunately decentralized sportsbooks without KYC and funds custody are growing fast, and will compete with those dishonest sportsbooks very soon IMO, because nobody likes being likely to be scammed once he manages to win risky bets. And even if scammed customers find a safe place to bet I don't think they will forget their stolen funds, so it's also a risky game for scammers. Still relevant :/

And perhaps realized that there's more to life than going for this, I even encouraged him to look for his family, yes it hurts if you think you got scammed even though you know you are right, I don't know who is right or wrong here, I just encourage OP to never consider suicide.
