Ups and down is normal nature for cryptocurrency market. Who are long time in crypto currency market he will know ups and down is normal. Some times it will go up and some times it will go down. It depend on many news and economic situation. But new comers will be frustrated when Market will fall it is also right. Because they are not familiar with this cryptocurrency markets habits. So i think your friend has been demotivated. But when market will up then he will satisfied there has no doubt. I also think we need to advantage of the price fall. If we entire in deep we will be huge profited today or tomorrow.
For a normal being, it would be "abnormal" for them so I am not surprised that there are just other people that ain't willing to invest in crypto at all due to its volatile nature. Sometimes it might be affected by news, but sometimes it just doesn't at all like it just follows the price of Bitcoin at all since it is the dominant coin in the market (obviously).
I do sleep on my investment sometimes and not able to "take advantage" of the price since I am still aiming for higher ATH. We were at 64k+ in Bitcoin long time ago and I am still yet to await its newer ATH.
