When I first heard of Cryptocurrency my friends told me my money would be more secure in crypto than the traditional banks and that I would be my own banker. So I opened a wallet only to hear that some person’s accounts were hacked.
Sorry to ask, what wallet did you open? Is it custodial or non-custodial? It's rare for a non-custodial wallet to get hacked, hacking is commonly associated exchanges so you probably opened an exchange.
Most times when you hear that a non-custodial wallet was hacked it's mostly due to the careless of the user, it's either they downloaded a malware that exposed their key phrases or they kept it in a place that's at the reach of the hacker.
According to MIT Technology Review, less popular blockchains have fewer nodes, making it easier for hackers to launch 51% of attacks.
It's possible to achieve with coins that are still in their early stage, but in the case if Bitcoin it's almost impossible to achieve due to the cost of the hackers to achieve that percentage of node.
So it's safe to say Bitcoin is safe from this type of attack.
