This is a very peculiar attack, firstly because it occurs far from the front, second because it has to be done from either inside Ruzzia or from the nearby border (I cannot discard that operatives could use NATO territory to launch the attack to be honest).
However, what I find more interesting is the target, the ILUs. These are similar to AWACS (quite large planes with a huge radar array) which are used to keep track of war planes. One or more reasons that could be economical:
- Expensive - these are super-high value targets.
- Scarce - Ruzzia does not have a lot, and they are quite difficult to produce or repair.
Or could be a preparation for an scenario in which Ukraine finally gets some decent Western 4th gen fighters and removing some ILUs would help to gain a degree of air superiority even if local and time limited.
Other less likely reasons are simply to provide Ukraine with a detection advantage. I am thinking that Meteor missile could do an impressive job out Ruzzia's jets provided you can see them first from 150 km - which could happen from an AWAC if they do not mirror with an ILU.
In any case, this is not just "some equipment", as said is critical for air defence, very expensive, not abundant and difficult to repair or build. It is an strategic attack, not your regular harrasment.
