Just saw this thread and have to add something.
I doubt DHL is that expensive for a small box with insurance.
A package from Germany to Japan, with insurance and airmail is around 40-50euro. So a package to France for example is around 15euro, insured up to 500euro.
500,- and more is straight up nonsense.
And about pawn shops. Every big city has state licensed pawn shops in Germany. Some have been running for generations.
You just go there, they evaluate the value, you get some cash. For chains and so on you only get the value of the material. They also pawn stuff like valuable phones, computers, and so on. All you need is an ID of course, without ID this won't work.
