This is just the basics, but anyone should be aware of it:

Budget: set it BEFORE you start gambling and stick to it.
Have a break from time to time, it is important to let your brain stop and consider.
Avoid drugs / drink as much as possible, they will make you loose some control innevitably.
Seek help if you feel you are no longer in control. Make a phone call to a friend or go out and speak with someone.

I agree with you; these are the principles that gamblers need to have. This is a game heavily influenced by psychology, so if we can't control our emotions, winning is nearly impossible. However, the challenge is that few people can do it, even if they've set these principles beforehand. When they get into the game, it's easy to get swept away, and what they've committed to is forgotten. I believe many people can relate to this.

I also often set principles for myself, but honestly, I've only managed to stick to about one-third of them. If I were to add one more thing, it would be this: taking profits and withdrawing winnings is never wrong. Playing with the profits you've earned is the best strategy.
