If there were some pending they have been dropped by most nodes, so it's as they never happened.
My advice would be to first contact your friend and tell him you've never got the funds, then ask him to either resend them with a higher fee or if he refuses to show you from which address and in what tractions he claims he has sent you those.

I just got off the phone with my friend and even though I gave him my BTC address he said he hasn't sent any payments yet.

It's been a confusing time for me but I've learned a lot. I didn't realize I could send money to a BTC address and not really send it.
