I had no idea road tax rules had become so complicated here in the UK until I spoke with the dealer today.

You pay a premium for a the first year, then a standard rate for subsequent years.
BUT if your car costs more than 40K (almost all nice cars now do), you have to pay an additional premium on top of the standard rate for the first 5 years,
but that first 5 years is counted from the second year onwards, not the first.
