I never expect you to go by this, and you think you're helping the newbies by directing them to where they can just apply for free merits and that's all?
They don't need to learn and know how they could earn the merit themselves from other members through quality post, for how long would they keep applying for free merits, as am concerned, this is a bad recommendation for a newbie to start with, they will always focus on merits through this and begin to device means to physh for merits when they can't apply for free one again.
I thought that as a newbie that you'd be thankful to the OP for directing you to a thread where you can increase your chances of getting merit and ranking up in the forum, there's no need to be acting up bravery here, if you can take advantage of a merit source that wants to help in distributing merit to deserving quality posts that have not received merit, then be happy and go for it. Giving merit in this forum is personal choices of members, so you can make the most quality posts and nobody will merit it, perhaps the members that might merit it are not on the thread that you made the post, so the system is not really fair regarding merit distribution. Although as a newbie, you should be more concerned about learning and increasing your crypto knowledge, eventually the merit will start to come, but don't ignore merit help from source members, every eligible ranks apply for merit, so why can't you?
