Perhaps the analogy is like this, out of 20 people, 10 are playing basketball while 5 does with chess. On the same analogy, 20 people are familiar with chess and same goes with Basketball however, the difference with communities between the two is that more people find other sports as more entertaining than Chess. To put it simple, gambling games which are being offered, in particular with sports betting are those sports which are "in demand" simply because sports providers are targeting larger groups of people with the same interest.
I often see chess gambling in the streets, played by some elders. Bets aren't that much and I guess those are just to add more thrill to the game itself and not primarily to promote or intensify the competition unlike with other sports such as billards (not offered by majority of the sports provider), basketball, and football matches.
