This would be something that is actually quite shame because gambling addict asks for help money for his wife but he has another goal by using the money as gambling capital.
However, it is not clear whether it will actually be used for gambling when the money has entered his account because there was no other conversation and you said that everything ended with no further response.
If I were personally asked to provide assistance like that from gambling addict, there would clearly be sense of skepticism because he could blame the money given, here it can clearly be concluded that gambling addict can use various ways to make money.
They have completely lost their consciousness by their own ambition and attitude towards gambling, I sure that people like this will always do the same thing in the future before realizing that it was all mistake.

he stranger offering aid had no prior acquaintance with the husband. Why then was there apprehension that the funds might fuel gambling rather than support the wife's medical needs?
If he is gambler or worse really is addicted then obviously there will always be concerns, I personally would also have the same attitude and do the same thing.
If it is for medical needs, it is better to visit him in person to ascertain his condition and hand over some money to the person concerned.
No one will ever be able to accept if their good intentions are used inappropriately or misused.
