he stranger offering aid had no prior acquaintance with the husband. Why then was there apprehension that the funds might fuel gambling rather than support the wife's medical needs?

This short story reflects the current reality we live in.
maybe because his wife already knew beforehand that her husband often gambled on gambling and when he needed money, he used the money he had to gamble in the hope of doubling the money he had to cover his desired needs.
for me, there are several categories for a gambling addict, between addicts who always depend or always hope that when they need money they will run to the casino to double their money and gambling addicts who continue to gamble without clarity as they only follow their dopamine lust.
well, from here we already know that it's not just addiction that looks bad but hoping or depending on gambling is very bad because it triggers a worse addiction when everything seems to fail, such as a gambling addict who needs money to pay for his wife's medical expenses but only have a small amount and use it for betting in the hope of winning big and being able to pay the hospital bill.

the reason many gambling addicts are men is because a man's responsibility is so great for his family, a man is required to continue to earn money to meet the family's needs so I am not surprised that most of the rates of insanity throughout the world are greatest among men. because it's all the pressure of responsibility.
and when a man has no way out to be more responsible in getting money they will get frustrated and run in an instant direction such as gambling to get money.
