I am not surprised by Girona's performance. The performance was basically what was expected from Girona. As great as they were at the start of the season, this was completely unexpected. However, Girona have dropped out of the title race after losing three of their last five matches. Even now, second place in the table is difficult for Girona to hold on to.

That is their realistic target, maybe at this time Barcelona only continues to try to win 3 points every La Liga match. Meanwhile, Girona's chances of returning to number one also seem impossible. It seems that they are starting to realize, indeed they have not been able to be at the level of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Other news is about Girona coaches who are in demand by many clubs. Míchel is reportedly in demand by Chelsea, this is because Pochettino did not have a big impact on Chelsea.
They have been declining lately, which is what made them finally allow Real Madrid to widen the points gap between them. Now actually their chances are still there, but the chances are getting smaller unlike before where their chances were bigger than now, even when they were leading the standings at that time they looked more promising. But basically Girona is not a big team that is usually at the top of the standings, so this is something they naturally accept.
I think just being in the top 4 is enough for them to achieve, because it is not easy to compete and become champions in La Liga considering that the giant teams here are also in good condition, like Real Madrid for example. Even if they were in the top 4, I would really appreciate them, because it's not easy to be in the top 4 for a team like them. I don't mean to belittle them at all, but I mean they are used to being at least mid-table, so when they are in the top flight the pressure will be even tighter.
