Since Real Madrid has made it hard for Girona to continue at the top of the league, it wasn't even proper for them to dropped back to third place. It would have been preferable if Girona had finished the season in second place. They needed to at least hold on their second position if winning the league gets more difficult, but they are unable to do so. Girona dropped points in important matches that they had to win in order to secure three points, the match against Mallorca and Getafe. In their last match against Getafe, Girona did not play as well as they had at the beginning of the season. Out of thirteen shots, it was only three that were on target without any goal. At the moment, Barcelona is two points ahead of them in second place.
There were several reasons when I previously said that Girona would eventually be pushed back down by more popular clubs and the most reasonable reason was simply the experience of being in 1st position in the points table or being in the top 3.
Popular clubs have more experience than Girona, so when Barca experiences a bad season in the middle of the season but in the end can catch Girona's position or even Atletico Madrid or Bilbao could overtake Girona because popular clubs have many strategies to be able to achieve the best ranking to end this season.
Girona at the start of the season did seem consistent but it has been proven that Girona does not have a good strategy to maintain its position and is now losing consistency again after being very ambitious at the start of the season but not seeing how a popular club would threaten its position.
Currently, what Girona needs is experience, even if they can't get 1st place, but maintaining to get a CL ticket is probably a very valuable experience.
