I think your description of this year's April Fool's joke is wrong. According to
theymos and from what I observed, we will not lose merits due to posts shorter than 15 characters, but quite the opposite - for every 15 characters we post, we will lose one Merit point. The joke is that the system actually penalizes long posts, and encourages writing short replies to reduce "shitposting". Another thing you didn't mention is that there is a system whereby you will earn a bit of merit just by reading posts.
