I think the best thing a friend can do for a friend is during difficult times, true friends don't give up on each other. If after all my advice, I will look for a close friend to talk to him better but not his family so that he wouldn't feel embarrassed.

I will stick to the close relative which I know will talk to him without involving his family in the process but as u said, I wouldn't give up on him until that gambling addiction is put to a stop.
