When I started gambling my mindset is solely about winning some cash to better my life but the more I gamble, the more that idea shifts. The money no longer satisfies my initial goal but the idea of winning does.

This is where you made a mistake. You should never gamble to satisfy your needs because the urge to win will always hungry you and when you lose, you will be disappointed big time like you would be angry that you loss but when you bets and you don't act like you need the money even when you win you would have what to use the money for, you wouldn't feel disappointed if you don't win later because you never even expect the bets to win.

But even with those ideals in play, why would a millionaire start gambling in the first place?

so why would a rich athlete or politician become so addictive to gambling?

I think socialization+joy+drinking+gambling is satisfaction to them. What do you think?

This is what I'm saying, a millionaire has the money to take care of his basic needs, what to eat, what to wear and also live a good life, they are gambling to win but they are not gambling because they need the money to feed or even buy a car, they all have what a normal gambler dream of, their main aim is to have fun and just make the money but the money is not to be use for buying car as average gamblers want to have.
