Unstable economy can cause depression among many other things. Depression doesn't come out of thin air, nor do the mental problems. And when you speak about people's current situations. Economy is the one that directly affects to that. Economic instability creates civil unrest and desperation. It can affect lack of housing, food, access to health care and overall welfare of people. And if that's not enough to affect your "current situation" right now, it doesn't mean it would not in the future.
