The plane was jacked and landed somewhere IMO.
Or it just crashed... or maybe we'll never know.
I suspect the engine satellite transponders were an oversight on the part of the hijackers as they don't directly relay position nor can they be switched off in-flight. The data they send can however be used to triangulate a position.
