For those that are interested, freebitco.in PR has posted an update explaining the reasons why there are problems on their website. They stated there is a backlog of mails and they are addressing the issue therefore at least they have alleviated concerns that this could have been heading towards an exit-scam.

I presume whether the signature campaign manages to become active again or not would depend on several factors but their announcement would probably bring confidence to people using their website.
