I think it's a very accurate speculation that Madrid's performance has dropped a bit, of course they have Mbappé and possibly Modic will stay as a midfielder without a doubt, but it's obvious that they need a more specialised midfielder, Kross was the best there, he should have held out a bit longer, however I think they don't need a striker as much now, they need to reinforce the midfield which for me is where games are won, the case of City with Pep and Haaland is a reality, without these characters I think City would look very bad, and although Pep has said something like that, it doesn't hurt that he can change teams.
