This was a very disappointing defeat for Germany and as hosts, they will only be witnesses to other countries who will lift the Euro 2024 trophy. Spain is really a very strong opponent for Germany. Even though they have the advantage of playing at home, Germany is still quite difficult to control the game, and even Spain seems to have a better rhythm than Germany.
Even though they lost, Germany actually put up quite a tough fight against Spain and they also had some good chances to score goals, it's just that they weren't lucky with their finishing touch.
They deserve to win against Spain or pull the opponent to penalty shootout but one magic pass from Olmo and one accurate head shot from Merino ended the match only several minutes before the final whistle.
Germany created more dangerous opportunities during the match than Spain but when I watched two extra half, I felt that Germany did not want to solve the match in penalty spot. Maybe they were fearful about Unai Simon, the goalkeeper of Spain with very good penalty saving skills and his style is very annoying and stressful for opponent players who are responsible for shots at the spot.
They tried and did nearly everything to win the quarter final but it's simply not their day. If the referee is someone else, maybe Germany would have been awarded a penalty after Cucurella's handball. The defender clearly shown his intention to close his arms to as nearest his body as possible but he did it too late and it's not deniable that if his arm did not touch the ball, that shot can become more dangerous. So in my opinion, it should be a penalty for Germany.
