The issue with Harry Kane is that he needs to score more goals in the important games. Now at the European Championship there wasn't much coming from Kane. Penalties and one goal, the header against Slovakia which was decent positioning but rather expected from him to score that easy goal.
But Bayern doesn't gain anything from Kane scoring 40 goals in the Bundesliga when eventually they lose the important matches because Kane gets neutralized in a smart way by the opponents.
He is a good striker, but Bayern has some problems on the wings at the moment. Sané is way too inconsistent, Coman is injured frequently, etc. I think Leverkusen will play another strong season although I don't think Bayern will be as weak as last season.
Kane does his job very well, I had no doubt that he would continue to score in Bayern because they have very good support for the forwards. From the first season he was able to become the best in the Bundesliga, otherwise he does what he can do very well and Bayern’s problem was not a bad attack, but a bad second half, when they conceded too many and could not maintain the winning score.
But it is still a question of scoring the right goals at the right time. I know he scored lots of important goals in the Bundesliga, but the decisive goals are mostly in the other competitions, like the DFB Pokal and especially the Champions League or like recently, in the European Championship. It's important to score in general, but it doesn't really matter whether you score 30 or 40 goals in the Bundesliga. The fact that he scored like a machine in the Bundesliga and they still lost the title the way they did is remarkable. Ultimately, top strikers are mostly measured by the goals they score in the most important games.
There was an analysis by "The Economist" and they produced some metrics comparing Ronaldo and Messi. They distributed importance among all goals scored. Like more points for the first goal in a Champions League semifinal than the second, third, fourth and whether the goal was decisive or not. Pretty interesting and Messi outplayed Ronaldo there by quite a bit. Doesn't mean Ronaldo didn't score important goals, he did and certainly tons of them. But still Messi's goals were more important overall. Same counts for Harry Kane. People are hoping for his goals when it counts.
