Hehe I actually had to look it up on dict.cc and spud is a female potato according to it. Anyways potato or "Kartoffel" is a name we germans are often given mostly by russians/eastern europeans (at least those are the ones I hear it from the most). Well because we germans eat potatos a lot. Actually atleast nowadays it is a lot more fitting than "Kraut" ;-).
