I did "setgenerate true 1" and immediately started getting constant "POWMined" messages (more than 1 per minute) with 0.00 amount. The messages were too annoying so I turned mining off after about 10 minutes. I am puzzled by the frequency, and that the amounts were all 0, no transaction fees. This is on linux with a wallet built from git.
it's network transactions, you will get mining fees, it's not much but i've got .005 from it so far, most are 0 though.
