After 35 German Bundesliga games, Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen tested conceded their first defeat today against RB Leipzig and to think that it happened in their own home turf makes everything more embarrassing for the German champions. It seems this season isn't going to be as rosy as it was for Bayer Leverkusen last campaign but that I don't mean to say I'm writing them off in the race to win the league title this season.
Despite the loss, I still have a lot of confidence on this Bayer Leverkusen team and I also think they have all it takes to compete for the league title. Now that Bayer Leverkusen have lost their own game, I'll wait to see if Bayern Munich will be able to defeat Freiburg tomorrow.
It's been a long time since we saw Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen side lose. It cannot be said that Leverkusen played badly and lost in this match. Leverkusen's performance was good. But they lost because of their weak defense.
While Xabi Alonso has taken the necessary measures to strengthen Leverkusen's attack this season, he has not taken the necessary measures to strengthen the defence. And that's probably why Leverkusen conceded their first defeat. In both matches we saw a shaky defense from Leverkusen. Leverkusen conceded 3 goals in today's home match against Leipzig after conceding 2 goals against Gladbach. If the defense is weak, the Leverkusen team will not do well in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
